There are plenty of options out there, but the ones we’ve chosen are fairly cheap, not too big and should be easy to get. We recommend finding out about their favourite characters beforehand, but you can find plenty of options here that aren’t MTG-specific and will still perform the role admirably. It’s always nice to show off your love of cats, for example, or you could even get a special one created from a family photo or something. The Final Fantasy Commander decks are beginner-friendly but expensive, running anywhere from $80 to $130 when Commander decks in other sets are much cheaper. If you’re a bit of a nerd for the story elements and flavor of Magic (no shade here! Nerd and proud!), then you probably want to see what r/mtgvorthos has in store. The subreddit is named after the “player archetype” Vorthos, who’s known for enjoying the flavor of their cards rather than the mechanics directly. Looking more at the non-competitive side of Magic, you’ll obviously see lots of talk about Commander here, as well as other formats where people like to bring jank.
You could post a draft log, or deck screenshot, for advice, ask about thoughts on a certain card, or the key cards in an archetype. While not the biggest subreddit on Magic on Reddit, it’s probably the biggest focusing on 40-card Magic. It helps a lot that the set is also a huge amount of fun to play, and being able mtg combo to enjoy building decks around the mechanics in either a draft or Commander is a surefire fun time for everyone involved. Now that you’ve learned the rules, found the colors you like, and learned a strategy that suits you, you probably want to move up to playing at a local game store (LGS) in your area. Your mileage will vary, as some stores’ player bases favor certain formats over others.
