This is very much one for fans of games like Outer Wilds and Return of the Obra Dinn, and better yeet, you can pick it up as part of PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass. Minishoot Adventures is a less well-known game than others on this list, but it’s a seriously underrated indie that becomes difficult to put down once you sink your teeth into it. It’s an action-adventure style game in the mold of a classic Zelda, but one that you play from the perspective of a top-down shooter.
Glitchspankr is about a 12-year-old boy in the 90s who tries to borrow his mom’s secret game, Big Booty Slapper 6 (my mom also loved this game guide game). However, a sentient virus named Spunk has infected and broken the game, and it’s up to you and the glitchspankr anti-virus to find Spunk and spank him out of the game. If that premise isn’t enough to get you into the game, Glitchspankr also features a fun voxel art style, lots of meta (and raunchy) humor, and a dose of nostalgia for kids of the 90s. Shadows of Chroma Tower is a first-person fantasy dungeon crawler with an art style that looks reminiscent of Void Bastards, except spookier. The action looks fun and frenetic, and you can wishlist it on Steam here.
You can groove to the amazing Danny Baranowsky soundtrack, or select songs from your own MP3 collection. You can use your powers of mind-hacking to interrogate suspects, as well as having the ability to scan your environment for electronic and biological sources, helping you to carry out investigations. While Observer is lighter on the action side of things, exploring its cyberpunk world and hacking citizens are fascinating. This is helped, too, by a great presentation and mood-setting soundtrack.
If you’re looking for the perfect way to spend a cozy night, then Unpacking will definitely help out with that. In this relaxing indie game, you follow a girl’s life as she moves into different spaces. You see her grow up, encounter challenges, and finally settle down all through the lens of unpacking boxes. There are multiple ways of facing problems in this roguelike deckbuilder.
How long does it take to develop an indie game?
The last game on our list is my personal favorite because it is fantastic. Starsector is a 2d space game sandbox that is basically the Mount and Blade of the genre. The premise is that you are an independent space pilot in a closed-off section of a galaxy trying to recover from an event known as The Great Collapse. Fall Guys is a silly and colorful game that is highly enjoyable to play.
Chaotic deliveries, colorful co-op action RPGs and other new indie games worth checking out
Cozy and wholesome games are great, but sometimes you just need to get your hack and slash on. Enter Morbid Metal, the hack’n’slash action roguelite from Screen Juice coming to early access on Steam this summer. Tobspr Games and Gamirror Games revealed that the early access factory building game Shapez 2 has a new update coming on June 2.
The problem escalates when you experience stages that add tricky terrain or puzzling mazes to navigate your way through the kitchen. The game is played with up to 4 players, and it gets more chaotic as more players join the fun. You work to find a place for every single item you unload, but you can do so in any way you choose. While this indie game isn’t particularly long it is still worth a look in. This classic RPG has a combat system that is easy to learn but hard to master. This means players are encouraged to sink time into Sea of Stars if only to master its high skill ceiling.
I’ve been ensnared into the wild life of a drug dealer in Schedule 1
There’s plenty of mystery and intrigue to keep you coming back to explore more of this beautifully illustrated adventure that looks like it was plucked straight from a Studio Ghibli movie. That lengthy stay in Early Access hasn’t stopped the developers from continuing to expand on Timberborn’s world void of humans, where lumberpunk beavers are running the show. May 8 brings with it the launch of Timberborn’s 7th update which introduces mechanics for ziplines and tubeways. At least, that’s what Mechanistry seems to believe when it comes to the next update for its city-builder Timberborn. Like Enshrouded, Timberborn remains in early access on PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG, where it has been since 2021. Endless Legend 2, developed by AMPLITUDE Studios (known for Humankind, Endless Space) and published by Hooded Horse, is a strategy game coming to Steam in Early Access this summer.
In Haque, players choose between characters featuring a vast array of differences in classes, races, equipment, and little travel companions. You want to be a bird-man necromancer with a crossbow that flings spells with one hand and fires arrows with the other? You want to be a werewolf armed with nunchucks and be the baddest martial artist this side of the full-moon? Along the way, you’ll find treasure troves of new gear to change up your style on the fly.
The game is a simple farming simulator, where its pixelated graphics might repel a few of the players, but the game is filled with amazing content worth thousands of hours. Many of these indie games cover a wide range of genres and topics; we have entries that also lie on our best roguelike list, such as Vampire Survivors or Cult of the Lamb. If you’re a fan of horror games then it’s best to check out our best indie horror games list.
Astral Rot is a survival horror game set in a haunting sci-fi universe, brought to life by the co-creators of Tormented Souls. It’s one of those horrors that aims to deliver a classic scare with the fixed-camera perspective, akin to older Resident Evil games. From atmospheric horror games like Replaced and Routine to heartwarming narratives such as Deer & Boy, the indie devs in 2025 aim to push the boundaries of storytelling and design.
Manifold Garden doesn’t really have characters in the way most games do. You are the only player in this game, and you explore the world and interact with it yourself. But there are some things that are like characters, even though they aren’t people. These are usually puzzles that you have to solve, and they give you hints to help you move forward.
With shots being one-hit-kill in most circumstances, it’s high stakes. For starters, it has almost 20 separate planets to visit, each with a generous helping of different areas and missions. There are several open-world and social zones which each have their own sets of missions, vendors and currencies. The game has around 300 different weapons and over 60 ‘frames,’ distinct exosuits with different stats and abilities, all of which can be levelled up, customised and augmented separately.
